Padraig Harrington named Europe’s 2020 Ryder Cup captain

Padraig Harrington has been confirmed as Europe's captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

Europe defend the trophy won by Thomas Bjorn and his team at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin in September 2020 and it will be Harrington who will lead the team.

The 47-year-old Irishman has a vast amount of Ryder Cup experience, having played in the contest six times and been a vice-captain for the last three matches.

In the least surprising news of 2019 thus far, Padraig Harrington was named captain for the 2020 European Ryder Cup team. This is not something I went into lightly.

"You look at this being a natural progression, but it's not something I have taken on without trepidation". "I don't think I ever thought I wasn't going to do it, but I wanted to make sure I was doing it for the right reasons. When I talked to the other players and potential captains going forward, it seemed to fit nicely that I go and do the away match". "I want to be a help to the players and to leave the Ryder Cup in the better place". "It's something I will take on over the next 18 months".

With Harrington Europe has continued its model of vice captains serving for a few years before taking the mantle.

"The reminder we have every day is the Harrington Room where we have all his trophies from his amateur days right through to the Walker Cup, Ryder Cup, then the Majors and competitions around the world", Mr King said.

Bjorn and previous captains Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley are on the panel that will decide who will lead Europe to America.

"It does make my job easier that I feel I have the confidence of the players", Harrington added.

He has got great experience in the USA, so he won't be intimidated. "The current players who are going to play under me have been very supportive".

"The second thing is the golf course that we're playing on is a European style golf course, it's a golf course that really suits the European style". They want to see what I have to give, which is nice.

The captain has so much more to think about, and the assistant captains play a big part in the decision-making process.

Couples captained the United States to three straight Presidents Cup triumphs from 2009 to 2013 and was a vice for the next two, but in 2017 he stated he felt his opportunity to oversee a Ryder Cup had "passed by".

"I remember getting scalded on one of the team meetings for laying up into a hazard".

However, Bookmakers have been quick to make US favourites - although they are yet to confirm their skipper with the likes of Steve Stricker and Fred Couples in contention.
