Turkey to launch attack against Kurds in Syria

Turkey and the United States are at loggerheads over the future of Syrian Kurdish forces after US President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement last month to pull out 2,000 troops from Syria.

But there are no easy answers.

Pompeo said the USA withdrawal from Syria will occur at a measured pace, with operations against Islamic State continuing as "we complete the mission of taking down the last elements of the caliphate before we depart". The Kurds there have fought alongside American troops, but Erdogan considers them terrorists. We've taken back the land. "We want to coordinate this process with Russian Federation and Iran, with which we had arranged work in the framework of the Astana process", Cavusoglu said Wednesday.

"It's one thing for the government to be very confident that an individual joined or tried to join ISIS".

"The age of self-inflicted American shame is over, and so are the policies that produced so much needless suffering", Pompeo said.

Meanwhile, the prisoner problem is only growing worse.

The State Department had said Pompeo's speech would focus on "the United States' commitment to peace, prosperity, stability, and security in the Middle East".

But Pompeo's effort at damage control was in part overshadowed by Bolton's rocky visit to Turkey, where he angered Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by walking back Trump's off-the-cuff Syria policy.

There are fears that the USA withdrawal will leave a door open for Turkey to assault the US -allied SDF fighters.

Any such offensive would likely see the YPG redirecting fighters battling the last Isil enclaves to the northern border with Turkey. Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia still have no USA ambassador.

US officials had said the two were expected to have consultations on Tuesday about the fate of Kurds allied with the Syria as part of discussions about Trump's troop draw-down.

Turkish officials had a tense meeting this week with US National Security Adviser John Bolton in Ankara aimed at coordinating the pullout process after Bolton set conditions that appeared to postpone it indefinitely.

Iraqi analyst Hani Ashour, who teaches political science at Baghdad University, told Sky News Arabia that the "Iraqi parliament was due to debate US troop levels in Iraq Thursday, following protests by some political parties over fears the USA was moving troops it was withdrawing from Syria to Iraq". Defence Secretary Jim Mattis quit over it. Misunderstanding of the administration's policy has been a cornerstone early in the trip, as the administration readjusts its rhetoric from an immediate withdrawal to a more lengthy and orderly pullout.

"ISIS is defeated militarily but the mission is not accomplished", Salih said, using an acronym for Islamic State. The program has identified more than 73 Americans, by their legal names, who are known to have joined jihadist groups. For Trump and his minions to achieve more, they must provide some clarity of goal, especially consistency at the outset.

At least 15 Houthi militants were killed attempting to launch a ballistic missile towards Saudi Arabia from Al-Tayyar district in Saada province on Wednesday, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

Senior diplomats from the three countries have held several rounds of consultations with the Astana format amid efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in the Arab country.
