Kensington Palace today disclosed the four roles the Duchess will take on, as the new Royal Patron of the National Theatre, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, animal charity Mayhew, and Smart Works, which is partnered with the Telegraph's Stella Magazine and provides a new wardrobe for women who are seeking work, as well as one-to-one coaching for interviews.

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) describes itself as the world's first and oldest global university network, which supports the development of higher education across the Commonwealth.

The Duchess of Sussex, who is due to give birth to her first child in spring, is estranged from Thomas Markle Jr. and her half sister Samantha. She also served as an ambassador for United Nations Women.

"The Duchess is delighted to become Patron of both national and grassroots organisations that are part of the fabric of the United Kingdom, and is very much looking forward to working with them to bring wider public attention to their causes", they added.

"Over the previous year, Her Royal Highness has held meetings and conducted private visits with each of these organisations", the Palace said.

Chief executive Kate Stephens said: "We are delighted that the Duchess of Sussex is our royal patron".

Animal welfare organisation Mayhew tweeted: "We're honoured to reveal that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex has become a Patron of Mayhew".

"An acknowledged champion of women and their rights worldwide, The Duchess will motivate ever more women to come to our centres and get the job that will transform their lives", she said.

The former Suits star then helped the ladies in finding outfits for women attending their second dressing, and she also sat in on interview coaching and preparation. "We would like to thank Her Majesty The Queen for her support, and we look forward to working closely with The Duchess as our Patron".

Mayhew is an animal welfare charity which helps cats and dogs through community initiatives and veterinary care.

Buckingham Palace said that "patronages generally reflect the interests of the member of the Royal Family involved".

Two of the patronages Meghan now has formerly belonged to the Queen and have been handed over to the Duchess.
