Jimmy Kimmel's Disclaimer For Trump's Speech Is Utterly On Target

All major television networks said they'll carry tonight's prime-time address by President Donald Trump on the escalating controversy over U.S. -Mexico border wall funding, which is causing a prolonged partial federal government shutdown. But the president is rejecting these bipartisan bills, which would reopen government over his obsession with forcing American taxpayers to waste billions of dollars on an expensive and ineffective wall - a wall he always promised Mexico would pay for.

"That is Donald Trump doing what Donald Trump does best: not paying the people who work for him. Go on TV and don't say there are illegal immigrants, say there is an army of chupacabras crawling in through Tijuana", he continued. That sets a precedent that may be tough for them to back away from in future events, he said.

Smith then asked Chris Wallace about whether the president's address had made the case for Trump's base. As a matter of fact, in 2014, networks denied President Barack Obama airtime for his immigration address. Kimmel quipped. "That's either a hall or the White House morgue, I'm not sure". "A fine speech that vastly exceeded the ridiculously low expectations created by the media", said Rich Lowry, editor of conservative mainstay National Review , which has been oft-critical of the president. We can reopen the government and continue to work through disagreements about policy. His address seemed to be a direct rebuke of Democratic arguments like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.), which portrayed a southern border wall as "immoral". "But he does want us to believe there is a crisis at the border beside the one he created".

Trump's narrative about the southern border "really is fiction".

The speech came amid an ongoing government shutdown.
