Epic Games Store poaches Ubisoft's The Division 2 from Steam

Ubisoft's The Division 2 will launch only on the Epic Games Store, completely forsaking Steam. We logged into our Epic Games Store account and were able to verify that this is indeed the case, although we're unsure if users would be able to change their location or spoof it using a VPN just to get a better deal, it's something that's still possible on GOG.

Ubisoft has announced that it will begin selling digital games on the Epic Games Store later this year.

But perhaps the biggest draw to Epic Games over Steam is the percentage of revenue share: Epic Games offers a much larger percentage for developers (especially those that sell fewer units) than Steam, meaning they'll make more money in the long run. A statement given to Polygon, however, states that the company "has no plans to release The Division 2 on Steam".

Epic Games, best known for the Unreal Engine and chart-topping Fortnite Battle Royale, announced its plan to launch a digital distribution platform open to third-party developers back in December 2018. Of course Ubisoft is keen to release its games through its own storefront and launcher - where it has to relinquish zero parts of the profit to a third-party distributor.

"We entrust Epic to deliver a smooth journey for our fans, from pre-ordering the game and enjoying our Beta to the launch", said Chris Early, vice president of partnerships at Ubisoft. While a welcome move for many a budget conscious gamer, it will be interesting to see how many games adopt this approach on Epic's store aside from The Division 2. 'We aim to provide the most publisher-friendly store, providing direct access to customers and an 88 percent revenue split, enabling game creators to further reinvest in building great games. It was a business decision to focus on Epic Store and Ubisoft Store for distribution of The Division 2 on PC.

The Division 2 is available to pre-order now on the Epic Games Store ahead of a March 15th release.
