Vic Fangio will be new head coach of the Denver Broncos

After news broke that Denver would hire Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio as the new head coach, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Kubiak will take control of the team's offense. However, Bowles has not signed a contract yet and was not officially announced to the job in Tampa, meaning he still could accept the role in Chicago.

Fangio is a first-time head coach at age 60.

Elway also interviewed former Colts coach Chuck Pagano, Steelers O-line coach Mike Munchak, Patriots defensive play-caller Brian Flores and Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor while searching for his fourth head coach in six seasons. A highly-respected defensive coordinator in the pros since 1999, and a defensive mind in the National Football League since 1986 when he became the Saints' linebackers coach, Fangio interviewed for the vacant 49ers head coaching position after Jim Harbaugh, his boss, had irreconcilable difference with the organization at the end of the 2014 season.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - In hiring Vic Fangio, the Denver Broncos are returning to a formula they trust.

"I love playing for that guy", Hicks said.

Elway didn't believe that innovation required a young up-and-comer, however.

Buy-in from players, which was there with Fangio and part of the reason the organization was so committed to retaining him and his staff after the Fox regime was sacked.

Fangio served as the Bears' defensive coordinator for four seasons.

Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks echoed those thoughts. Much like Bruce Arians, who was hired by the Buccaneers yesterday, Fangio is an older coach with new-school ideas and a knack for relating to his players and getting them to play at their best.

"He's an evil genius", Mack told NFL.com in November.

The Bears' playoff run came to a shocking end Sunday night when Cody Parkey's last-second field-goal attempt was tipped and bounced off the left upright and the crossbar for his 11th miss of the season, sealing Philadelphia's 16-15 escape in the wild-card round. He inherits a Denver defense that finished 13th in scoring at 21.8 points per game last season. Though his specialty is defense, talking to him reveals a coach who understands all facets of the game. But whether it can result in the equal of what the Bears built under Fangio and John Fox is anything but a given.
