FACT CHECK: Trump oversells wall as a solution to drugs

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has stated that House Democrats are planning to pass a number of individual appropriation bills in the upcoming week to enable the opening of certain government agencies, such as the IRS and the Treasury Department, without resolving Trump's core demand that led to the shutdown.

In a 2018 report, the agency said the most common trafficking technique by transnational criminal organizations is to hide drugs in passenger vehicles or tractor-trailers as they drive into the US though entry ports, where they are stopped and subject to inspection.

Democrats largely agree with those types of measures, and in their bills have backed spending $1.3 billion for scanning equipment and adding more border personnel. "... We have a crisis at the border... it is national security; it's a national emergency".

"At the request of Democrats, it will be a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall". He said precious lives were cut short repeatedly by those who have violated the borders.

"America's heart broke the day after Christmas, when a young police officer in California was savagely murdered in cold blood by an illegal alien, who just came across the border", Donald Trump said in his address.

Instead, Mr Trump used the president's most symbolic and powerful perch - traditionally reserved for times of war or calls for national unity - to rattle off familiar statistics, renew complaints about Democratic criticism of his plan to build a wall on the Mexican border and reprise ominous anecdotes of brutal crimes committed by people he said were in the country illegally.

Trump stretched credulity even more by comparing the wall money he wants from Congress to the cost of the entire drug problem in the U.S.: "The border wall would very quickly pay for itself". However, we sharply disagree with the President about the most effective way to do it. There is bipartisan legislation - supported by Democrats and Republicans - to re-open government while allowing debate over border security to continue. That's because the federal government has been partially shutdown for over two weeks.

Michigan Uber driver pleads guilty to 6 murders in 2016
After his arrest, police quoted Dalton as saying a "devil figure" on Uber's app was controlling him on the day of the shootings . Dalton's guilty plea wasn't part of any deal negotiated with prosecutors and his attorney reportedly advised him against it.

The bottom line? There wasn't any new information in Trump's first Oval Office address; it was the same old racism and the same old xenophobia.

What did Trump have to say about the wall? New York City, for example, has the nation's largest population of immigrants living in the country illegally - about 500,000 - and a year ago had only 289 murders among a total population of 8.5 million people, according to preliminary data.

Those numbers mean a person's odds of becoming a victim of homicide in tightly packed, diverse New York City were about the same as they were previous year in Montana.

TRUMP: "The wall will also be paid for indirectly by the great new trade deal we have made with Mexico".

Trump, who has long railed against illegal immigration at the border, has recently seized on humanitarian concerns to argue there is a broader crisis that can only be solved with a wall along the US-Mexico border. Whether he is right or wrong, Trump has exaggerated the problem by repeatedly promoting the discredited notion that terrorism suspects are pouring into the US from Mexico by the thousands.

The number of illegal border crossings is down from 1.6 million in 2000 to fewer than 400,000 a year ago. He ordered U.S. troops to take up stations on the border. "This is about whether we fulfil our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve", Trump said.
