Man arrested after 20 children injured in Chinese primary school attack

Of the 20 children taken to hospital, three were reported to have been seriously injured, although their condition was stable, according to the local government.

The man is a maintenance worker at the school and his contract is due to expire at the end of January, police said.

The attacker, originally from northeastern Heilongjiang province, has been detained by police and an investigation was under way, state television said.

The attack happened at Xuanwu Normal Experimental Affiliated Number One Primary School just after 11.15am.

Several of the pupils were taken to the intensive care unit of the nearby Xuanwu Hospital.

A synopsis for the series on Lifetime's website reads: "In the ground-breaking documentary series Surviving R. Kelly , women are emerging from the shadows and uniting their voices to share their stories".

Authorities did not say what weapon, if any, was used.

"I heard that children were attacked (by someone) with a knife, so I'm very anxious", said a woman surnamed Zhou as she waited for her child to finish school. Another video shows anxious parents forming a large crowd outside the school's entrance, demanding details. "It is not like what everyone is saying, he did not use a knife", the teacher said. Second grade classrooms are on the first floor, it was children from those classes. All the children are receiving hospital treatment. We have been communicating with parents but some of them have gone to the hospital to see their children.

"People who hurt children do not deserved to be forgiven", a social media user wrote in a post on Weibo, a Twitter-like microblog. "Nurses are rushing in and out of the operation rooms".

The agency also noted that violent crime is rare in China but there has been a series of knife and axe attacks in recent years, many targeting children.

Earlier in April, nine schoolchildren were killed by a man who went on a knife spree at a school in Shaanxi province, and another two were stabbed to death outside a Shanghai kindergarten in June.
