Trump Confirms That US Military Killed Terrorist Behind USS Cole Bombing

Jamal al-Badawi, the al-Qaeda militant behind the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000, died in a USA air strike, President Donald Trump has confirmed.

A Pentagon spokesman said Friday that USA forces were working to confirm whether al-Badawi was killed in airstrikes east of the Yemeni capital Sanaa earlier last week.

Suicide bombers using boats full of explosives attacked the Cole, a guided-missile destroyer, while it was refueling at the Yemeni port of Aden in October 12, 2000.

The president took to Twitter on Sunday morning to announce the death of Jamal al-Badawi, one of the conspirators behind the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000.

Al-Badawi was arrested by Yemeni authorities in December 2000 and held in connection with the attack but escaped from prison in Yemen in April 2003.

Seventeen American sailors were killed as well as the two perpetrators of the attack that was claimed by Al-Qaeda, in an early success for the terror group and its founder Osama bin Laden.

Al-Badawi was captured in Yemen and sentenced to death in 2004.

The blast left a gaping hole in the vessel's hull and wounded more than three dozen others.
