Iran to Send Warships to Atlantic Ocean

Iran sees the presence of US aircraft carriers in the Gulf as a security concern and its navy has sought to counter that by showing the flag near American waters.

Friday's statement comes after on Thursday US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif engaged in a war of words via Twitter over Iran's space program.

"The navy has had a plan to deploy a flotilla to the Atlantic Ocean for a few years and now everything seems prepared to launch the mission", said Fars news agency, which is considered close to Iran's military.

Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani told the state-run IRNA news site the flotilla of warships would depart for the Atlantic in March, and the mission would take several months. The application was created to be five months, this was the longest Mission of the Navy of the last ten years.
