Allies should rally to protect Taiwan from China: Tsai

Beijing lead a "targeted campaign" against Taiwan, said the President on Saturday, representatives of the foreign media in Taipei.

But in November, Tsai's DPP suffered a string of defeats in local elections, fueled by a backlash over her domestic reforms and deteriorating ties with China, easily Taiwan's largest market.

J Michael Cole, a Taipei-based expert with the University of Nottingham's China Policy Institute, said the vote bolstered Tsai's chances of standing for a second term.

Earlier, Tsai warned against continued threats from China, signaling a hard line despite her recent election losses to the island's more Beijing-friendly party.

The entire armed forces should have a correct understanding of China's security and development trends, enhance their awareness of danger, crisis and war, and make solid efforts on combat preparations in order to accomplish the tasks assigned by the CPC and the people, Xi said. The result rattled Beijing because Tsai refuses to acknowledge that the self-ruled island is part of "one China".

Chinese President Xi Jinping continues to seek reunification with Taiwan in an attempt to "rejuvenate" China, and is willing to use military force to do so.

"We hope that the worldwide community takes it seriously and can voice support and help us", Tsai told reporters in Taipei, referring to threats by China to use force to bring Taiwan under its control.

Taiwan is China's most sensitive issue and is claimed by Beijing as its sacred territory.

He also reiterated China's willingness to use force if necessary, especially if Taiwan ever declares full independence. Both Tsai and the China-friendly opposition Kuomintang rejected Xi's proposal, saying his "one country, two systems" framework lacks support in Taiwan.

Alexander Huang, an global relations professor at Tamkang University, said Cho's win did not reflect directly on Tsai, but suggested that DPP members preferred stability over a big change, given You's clear support for Taiwanese independence. The United States has not recognized Taiwan diplomatically, however, is Washington's closest political and military allies of the island. "Any major departure from long-standing policy under President Tsai could alarm worldwide partners and give Beijing ammunition to further crack down on Taiwan".

Cho has taken a more conciliatory tone toward Tsai, pledging to promote unity and "restore the confidence" in the party.

Analysts said Xi's definition of the consensus serves only to shut the door to negotiations since Tsai and the DPP will not hold talks under the consensus.
