USS Cole bomber Jamal al-Badawi targeted in Yemen air strike

A USA airstrike in western Yemen may have killed one of the men suspected of coordinating a terror bombing on the USS Cole in 2000 that killed 17 US sailors, Defense officials said Friday.

The official word from CENTCOM as of Friday afternoon was that "U.S. forces are still assessing the results of the strike" that targeted al-Badawi.

A USA official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told CNN on Friday that Al-Badawi was struck while driving alone in a vehicle.

Trump administration officials told CNN the strike hit al-Badawi while he was driving alone through the Ma'rib Governorate in Yemen, killing the terrorist leader without any collateral damage.

USA officials believe a drone strike killed one of the terrorists behind the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen.

The administration official said that al-Badawi was struck while driving alone in a vehicle and that the United States assessed there was not any collateral damage.

Al-Badawi, who was listed on the FBI's most wanted terrorists list, escaped from prison in 2003 and was recaptured more than a year later.

The al Qaeda terrorist who masterminded the 2000 attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 sailors is believed to have been killed in a U.S. airstrike in Yemen, according to a report.

The chief suspect Abdel Rahim al-Nashiri is being held in Guantanamo Bay.

A federal grand jury indicted Badawi on 50 counts in 2003 for the bombing.

The Cole was attacked by suicide bombers in a small vessel packed with explosives while in port in Aden, Yemen, for refueling. He was recaptured in March 2004 and sentenced to death, but almost two years later he managed to escape a second time.

Seventeen US sailors were killed and at least 40 people were wounded in the attack on 12 October 2000 which happened as the destroyer was refuelling. Central Intelligence Agency drone strikes are not publicly acknowledged.
