Iran’s Upcoming Space Launches Defy U.N. Security Council Resolution

Iran’s Upcoming Space Launches Defy U.N. Security Council Resolution

According to Pompeo, Iran would be violating UN Security Council Resolution 2231 - which calls upon Tehran "not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons" - if it went ahead with its declared intention of sending three Space Launch Vehicles (SLVs) into Earth orbit.

Iran should stop all test launches of ballistic missiles to avoid even more serious economic sanctions by the U.S. Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State said that with the press revealing his statement.

While Iran's defence ministry said it planned to launch Space Launch Vehicles (SLVs), these incorporate technology that is virtually identical to that used in ballistic missiles, including in intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), Mr Pompeo said in a statement.

Pompeo said the rocket launches would violate UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

On December 1, the Iranian regime test-fired a medium range ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads, both routine and nuclear-armed warheads, according to Israeli sources.

Iranian Deputy Defense Minister General Qassem Taqizadeh previously confirmed that Iran was planning to launch three satellites into space soon.

The resolutions were tied to the 2015 nuclear accord signed by Iran with six world powers - the United States, France, Germany, Britain, China, and Russian Federation. Tehran denies it has missiles created to carry nuclear warheads.

He added, "Everyone is depressed, and maybe that's as good a reason as any that everyone could use a little time to laugh and celebrate".

Iran has repeatedly vowed that it would continue its missile testing in a bid to ensure its security from foreign aggression, but has also promised never to create nuclear-capable missiles.

Pompeo said the U.S. has continuously cautioned that ballistic missile and SLV launches by Iran have a destabilising effect on the region and beyond.

President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal previous year.

Tehran has always emphasized that it has no nuclear warheads and that none of its missiles have been created to carry nuclear weapons.

USA intelligence has warned that the space technology could easily be converted to long-range missiles.

"The United States has continuously cautioned that ballistic missile and SLV launches by the Iranian regime have a destabilizing effect on the region and beyond", he added.

The U.S. "won't stand by" as Iran prepares to launch several objects into space, Washington's top diplomat warned Thursday.
