Forget keto - the Mediterranean diet was just named the best for 2019

Many people are ditching the cookies and candies in the new year because it's diet season.

The flexitarian diet encourages people to try alternative meat options, like tofu, but leaves room for flexibility if you can't quite fully give up meat.

If you've ever been confused about what to eat, you're definitely not alone. In the latest rankings, the Mediterranean diet also took the titles of best diet for healthy eating, diabetes and heart health, the easiest diet to follow and the best plant-based diet. Those two diets tied for the 38th spot out of 41 diet plans reviewed by U.S. News and World Report's panel of medical experts.

For the second year in a row, the Mediterranean diet was named the best diet in America by U.S. News & World Report.

Third for quick weight loss was the keto diet - very low-carb, high-fat.

She says the Mediterranean Diet is based on the cuisine of the Mediterranean region, which includes lean proteins such as fish and beans, as well as healthy fats, whole grains and a large amount of plant-based foods, like fruits, vegetables and legumes.

Other diets at the bottom of the list included the Dukan diet, the Body Reset Diet and the Whole30 diet.

The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet was created to help manage blood pressure, but experts say it has many overall health benefits, helping it nab the number 2 spot on the best overall diets list.

This plant-heavy diet focuses on adding five food groups - "new meat", fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and sugar and spices - to your diet, instead of taking foods away.

"I wish though, that we weren't so obsessed with weight loss and diets, per se".

The Mediterranean diet has been linked to increased longevity and a decreased risk of chronic illnesses, the report said. The plan also involves in-person meetings or online chats created to support those in the program and keep them accountable.
