Spurs in contract talks with Christian Eriksen, risk losing him

Mauricio Pochettino believes winning trophies would not have saved him from the sack as Tottenham manager if the club were not competing at the top end of the Premier League.

Christian Eriksen has been in sensational form for Tottenham Hotspur over the Christmas period, but while the Danish worldwide is flourishing for the north London club it's reported that he is stalling on signing a new contract, which has left some of the European big-hitters eyeing up a move for his signature.

"Football is about interests that sometimes as a manager we can not manage".

Prior to this season, Tranmere Rovers have spent the last three years having to qualify for the first round proper during their time as a non-league club while tonight's opponents Tottenham Hotspur have reached the semi-finals of the competition in both of the last two campaigns.

"It depends on many things in this business - different parties that have interests".

"But in the end it's a negotiation and there's different parties that have different interests".

"It would be fantastic if Christian commits with the club for a long time".

Guardiola refused to be drawn on Kompany's tackle of Salah in the first half, which Jurgen Klopp believed was a red card. Manchester City's defence is not lacking in investment though and shouldn't need to rely on such a safety net.

Pochettino was happy to reel off a list of clubs who have won trophies in the last few years but are now struggling in the league.

As doubts continue to surround the likes of Toby Alderweireld, it seems inevitable that Foyth will only continue to gain more importance in the Tottenham set-up, unfortunately for Bielsa.

"In some clubs, if you don't win a trophy, you fail".

"It will show we are in a good position, and of course it's going to be good for our egos".

"I think the people want trophies and (think) that it means you are very successful", he added. 'Oh the manager disrespects the Carabao Cup or FA Cup.' No, it is the opposite.

"When you add that you need to finish your facilities, like the training ground or the new stadium, you add hard things".
