Channel migrants: Six Iranians detained on Kent beach

Channel migrants: Six Iranians detained on Kent beach

"We are co-ordinating to strengthen our actions to combat Channel crossings undertaken by certain irregular migrants on small boats, at peril of their lives".

Mr Javid spoke to French interior minister Christopher Castaner by telephone on Sunday.

Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary, may have cut short his holiday in South Africa in the last 24 hours, but this situation has been growing in intensity since November - and you don't need to be a Border Force employee to know that.

But he was it was "vital we strike a balance between protecting them and protecting our borders" after he was urged to deploy more Border Force Cutters.

Three migrants who were attempting to cross The English Channel from France to Britain are seen as they drift in an inflatable canoe off the French coast at Calais in August.

"They have not got a grip on it".

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned that more "highly dangerous" attempts by migrants to reach the United Kingdom are likely.

"While the Tories wax lyrical about control of our borders and being tough on security, they can not seem to get a grip on criminal smugglers operating on a few hundred miles of coastline, in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world".

Rehman Chishti, the Tory MP for Gillingham and Rainham who sits on the Home Affairs Select Committee, said there had been "a lack of leadership to get a grip on this issue".

"We couldn't get it going. Ultimately the buck stops with the Home Secretary".

Only one of the Border Force's fleet of five cutters - specialist boats which the force describes as being capable of rescuing several migrant boats at the same time - is now operational in the Dover Strait.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has called the crossings a "major incident" and reached out to French officials for more coordination.

The Home Office has been approached for comment.

Javid appointed a gold commander to deal with the crisis and asked for an urgent call with his French counterpart to deal with the issue.

Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes said in a statement that attempting to cross the channel in these small boats is "extremely unsafe", adding that some of the activity is facilitated by organized crime groups. "They are around and about in the camps, they are in the cafes in those areas of Calais".
