Inter Milan given two-match stadium closure after Koulibaly monkey chants

Inter Milan given two-match stadium closure after Koulibaly monkey chants

Cristiano Ronaldo has come to the defense of Kalidou Koulibaly after the Napoli defender was the target of racist chants during a match at Inter Milan.

He was hit by a van carrying away fans and his death was confirmed on Thursday morning, after surgery in hospital couldn't save his life.

"The Inter ultras beat the bus carrying Napoli fans with bars and sticks, injuring four of them".

It was when the visiting contingent got back in the van that the fatal incident with the Inter fan occurred.

Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne will also miss two games for the red card he received deep in stoppage time "for aiming a seriously insulting remark at the referee" with his sanction more severe in view of the fact he was wearing the captain's armband.

"Those jeers at Koulibaly were a disgrace", wrote the mayor, Giuseppe Sala, on his Facebook page after the Wednesday's match.

Carlo Ancelotti has already said that his side would not accept this kind of behaviour in the future, saying that he would be willing to forfeit future matches should it happen again. "But I am proud of the colour of my skin; to be French, Senegalese, Neapolitan: a man".

"Racist chanting should not be taking place", he told a news conference.

'I will continue to watch Inter but at the first chant I will make a small gesture.

'I apologise to Kalidou Koulibaly on my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Milan who testify to feeling that we are brothers even in these hard times'.

"I saw a strong Inter tonight, from the beginning to the end", he said.

Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti said he called for the game to be stopped three times but authorities did not listen.

Match officials in Italy are expected to report racist incidents to public security officials who have the power to stop games.

"But I know you well enough that these abominable acts will not reach you at all. Next time we'll stop the match by leaving the pitch, even if that means maybe forfeiting the match".

Koulibaly, who was sent off during the game, addressed the issue on social media after the match, which was won by Lautoro Martinez's late goal, writing: "I'm sorry for the defeat and above all for having left my brothers!"
