U.S. government shutdown continues as Democrats refuse funds for Mexico wall

"As long as the president is guided by the House Freedom Caucus, it's hard to see how he can come up with a solution that can pass both the House and Senate and end his Trump Shutdown", the two Democrats said in their statement.

This was also the first time he had said that replacing old fencing would count, in his mind, toward his central campaign promise of building a "big handsome wall" on the U.S. -Mexico border.

"Many of those workers have said to me - communicated - stay out until you get the funding for the wall", Trump said, speaking to reporters after a teleconference to offer holiday greetings to USA military personnel. I'll call it whatever they want, he said to reporters after the annual Christmas tradition of calling USA troops deployed overseas.

Trump has not budged on the issue, despite Schumer's comments, adding that it's a barrier from dangers like drug smuggling.

And domestic issues are just part of the far from merry Christmas picture, with Trump also juggling a trade war with China and fallout from his abrupt decision to pull USA troops from Afghanistan and Syria. "And we can be the policemen of the world, but other countries have to help us". He insisted the market was ripe for buyers.

"I thought it would be wrong for me to be with my family", he said, explaining his decision. "Really a great opportunity to buy".

On Christmas Eve, Trump tweeted he was alone in the White House as he waited for Democrats to cave and give him his wall.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Trump and the Democrats need to resolve the dispute over boarder funding before he brings up legislation to end the shutdown in the Senate.

Donald Trump let loose a series of tweets on Christmas Eve that show he has a very good idea about who's been naughty and who's been nice. George W. Bush spent the holiday at Camp David during his eight years in office, while Barack Obama traveled to his native Hawaii.

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of festive spirit at the White House this Christmas...

"The stock market is tanking and the president is waging a personal war on the Federal Reserve after he just fired the secretary of defense", they said. "These federal workers want the wall".

"I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security", he tweeted. Opponents have also noted previous efforts to strengthen the border that have been cheaper than building a wall.

If there's no agreement, many lawmakers won't return until the new session of Congress starts on Jan 3, when Democrats take control of the House.

In response to a question from a reporter in the Oval Office, President Trump touted some of the progress that has recently been made on border security, and also explained some of the claims he has made on Twitter in recent days about sections of the wall that are already under construction.

He said: 'Everybody hated Comey, they thought he did a awful job. They were calling for his resignation. Later, Trump's firing of Comey was viewed by many Democrats as a way to short-circuit the FBI's investigation into Russian election meddling.
