48-yr-old British woman raped near Goa's Palolem beach; accused missing

Ramchandran Y, 31, a native of Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu, was on the run for nearly a month after his arrest in a robbery of Rs 30 lac at Pernem town in North Goa.

Police inspector Rajendra Prabhudesai said that "the woman complained to the police that while she was walking from the Canacona railway station towards the beach, an unidentified person forcibly took her and raped her".

According to news reports, the woman, who was raped is a 48-year-old tourist, who was a frequent visitor to Goa.

The police said the incident occurred around 4.30 am when the British woman was returning to her room after waiting for almost two hours for the train to Margao.

'But, as the train got delayed, she made a decision to return to the place where she was staying near the Palolem beach.

The sheer luck helped Canacona police to crack down the case of a rape and robbery of British woman.

She had been waiting at the railway station but walked back to her guest house after her train was delayed.

According to IGP Goa police Jaspal Singh, the victim was robbed of Rs 20,000 cash, her passport and some personal belongings.

The victim in her complaint to the police stated that the accused held her neck from behind and pushed her when she reached the junction near the BSNL telephone exchange.

The woman somehow gathered courage and knocked on the door of a friend who stayed in a nearby apartment and from there called the police control room.

Officials from the Crime Branch are assisting the South Goa district police in the investigation.

The case took a dramatic twist after the railway police arrested the accused at the Margao police station on suspicion as he was wanted by the Pernem police in connection with the Rs 32 lakh robbery case.

Vikat Bhagat, a habitual offender whom Ms McLaughlin had befriended, was arrested in the case and charged with her rape and murder, as well as theft and destruction of evidence, after allegedly confessing to the crime.
