McConnell Confident That A Government Shutdown Will Be Averted

But Sanders on Tuesday said the administration has "other ways that we can get to that $US5 billion", marking a dramatic reversal in tone from the White House on the matter.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi - the likely next speaker of the House when Democrats take control of the chamber January 3 - and top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer shot down the proposal, saying the $1.6 billion in border security funding in proposed legislation is sufficient.

"Time for us to save billions of dollars a year and have, at the same time, far greater safety and control".

Trump had stood firm for days, declaring he needed the funds to build the controversial wall, defiantly proclaiming last week that he would be "proud" to stop some government operations cold after a midnight Friday deadline if he did not get his wish.

Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill were largely in the dark about the latest negotiations to keep the government open until her announcement, with GOP senators unsure of what President Donald Trump's next move would be.

That's because Congress has already funded roughly 75% of the federal government through September 2019, including the Pentagon as well as the Departments of Health and Human Services and Labor.

But the president doesn't have the votes from the Republican-controlled Congress to support funding for the wall at that level. "People of this country don't want criminals and people that have lots of problems and drugs pouring into our country". Schumer called McConnell to reject it.

That provision would bring in only about $600 million a year - nowhere near enough to pay for a $25 billion wall, even after two decades.

"The president has asked every agency to look and see if they have money that can be used", Sanders said.

Trump said it was still "too early to say" whether a deal could be struck in time.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opened the Senate on December 17 urging completion of a spending bill. "We want to shut down the border from illegal immigration".

"I will take the mantle of shutting down, and I'm going to shut it down for border security".

If funds run out, the NASA space program would potentially go unfunded, along with national parks, the US diplomatic corps, and agriculture programs.

The fact sheet, which outlines the projected impacts of a shutdown, estimates that the vast majority of employees at the Department of Homeland Security would be among those required to work without pay during a shutdown, including tens of thousands of Customs and Border Protection agents and customs officers.

Their paychecks, however, would not be issued until the shutdown ends and Congress would have to decide whether to award back pay for them as well as any furloughed workers. - USA officials closed the San Ysidro crossing point in southern California on Sunday after hundreds of migrants, part of the "caravan" condemned by President Donald Trump, tried to breach a fence from Tijuana, authorities announced.

Fox News is told there are some efforts to try to convince Trump to consider a short-term spending bill.

"That's something that we would be able to support", she said.

"Let's make sure we get the president the money he needs to keep America safe".

She said it would need to be coupled with other funding sources, such as defence money.

Congressional leaders say they are opposed to a shutdown.
