Geraint Thomas beats Lewis Hamilton and Harry Kane to BBC SPOTY crown

This year's nominees were footballer Harry Kane, cyclist Geraint Thomas, Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton, sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, cricketer James Anderson and former skeleton racer Lizzy Yarnold.

Thomas, 32, signed a new four-year deal with Team Sky in September.

While Geraint Thomas's victory in the main category made it another golden night for cycling, netball was the other conspicuous victor from last night's BBC Sports Personality of the Year show. They opted to leave him off the ballot paper but did put the fight in Los Angeles on the shortlist for the Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year award, a new competition decided by public vote.

"I take great pride in representing Britain and Wales".

Unfortunately, his speech was cut short by Clare Balding, although the BBC repaired the mistake later in the show by letting the inspirational Monger complete his "thank yous".

The ceremony in Birmingham included a performance of England football anthem Three Lions by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.

England's netball team were named Team of the Year while golfer, Francesco Molinari emerging the World Sport Star of the Year having won his maiden major during the year as well as playing a pivotal role in Europe's Ryder Cup glory.

At the time of the theft in September, Thomas appealed for its return and said: "The trophy means a lot to me and to the team".
