Laverne & Shirley also starred Cindy Williams as Shirley, indelicate tomboy Laverne's more well-mannered apartment roommate and brewery co-worker.

Marshall's triumphs as a director broke new ground the male-dominated movie industry, and she became the first female director to score a US$100 million gross with Big in 1988. Other directing projects included the 1990 Oliver Sacks adaptation Awakenings, starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, and, in 1992, A League of Their Own, a fictionalized story based on the real-life members of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, starring Geena Davis and Tom Hanks and featuring Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell.

Marshall was treated 10 years ago for cancer of the brain and lung.

She later directed cult-classic films such as "Big" and "A League of Their Own". "And so, she was a pioneer in the studio-movie world", Melissa Silverstein, founder of the advocacy group Women and Hollywood, told the BBC.

Hanks delivered a great performance in the wistful comedy as a 12-year-old boy whose wish to become an adult is magically granted.

A Bronx native, Marshall became a dedicated Los Angeles Lakers fan, and a courtside regular.

Ava DuVernay, whose "A Wrinkle in Time" was the first $100 million-budgeted film directed by a woman of color, said Tuesday: "Thank you, Penny Marshall".

In addition to her thriving directing career, Marshall still appeared in film and on TV herself, both in person and with voiceovers.

Tom Hanks, who starred in Marshall's hit comedy Big, remembered the times he laughed alongside the late director.

Her family also confirmed the news in a statement: "Our family is heartbroken over the passing of Penny Marshall", the statement to TMZ read.

Marshall received the 1991 Women In Film Crystal Award and is featured in the WIF Legacy Series for her work as a proponent of women in film and television.

She's survived by a daughter, actress Tracy Marshall, and a sister, Ronny Hallin.

As an actress, Marshall was best known as the "L"-branded, Pepsi-and-milk-swilling Laverne DeFazio opposite Cindy Williams's somewhat more refined Shirley Feeney on Laverne & Shirley, the 1950s/'60s-set ABC sitcom that was one of the top-rated shows of the 1970s".

Her second marriage was to actor and director Rob Reiner, who grew up across the street from her in New York City.

"I didn't know my brother that well", she said in a 2012 interview.

Actor James Woods wrote online, "I am absolutely devastated".

Danny DeVito said she had a "heart of gold".
