The club is expected to officially announce the deal on Saturday morning. The Indians also rid themselves of Alonso's entire $8 million salary for 2019.

The Indians, who are trying to gain payroll flexibility, have traded Yan Gomes, Encarnacion, Diaz and Alonso since November 30. In return, the Indians are getting minor leaguer Alex Call. "We feel like the series of moves we've made up to this point advances both of those goals". The club has considered trading either ace Corey Kluber or All-Star Trevor Bauer.

Alonso swatted 23 home runs and posted an OPS of.738 in 2018, his age 31 season. This is the first trade between the teams since the Indians sent catcher-first baseman Matt Merullo to Chicago for outfielder Ken Ramos on March 30, 1994.

White House, Democrats dig in as shutdown fears intensify
But the president doesn't have the votes from the Republican-controlled Congress to support funding for the wall at that level. He is now seeking at least $5 billion for the construction of the wall, a figure that democrats in congress have balked over.

And as a nice little bonus, Alonso gets to reunite with White Sox manager Rick Renteria, with whom he overlapped in San Diego when the latter was an assistant. Chicago will take over all of Alonso's remaining contract obligations.

The White Sox also have expressed interest this offseason in free-agent slugger Manny Machado.

Alonso was selected by Cincinnati in the first round of the 2008 amateur draft and broke into the majors with the Reds in 2010. He hit 51 home runs over the last two seasons with the Athletics, Mariners and Indians. He hit a combined.248 (107-for-431) with 28 doubles, four triples, 12 homers and 58 RBI in 123 games.
