Israel chides Australia's recognition of West Jerusalem as capital

The prime minister added that Australia recognized the aspirations of the Palestinians for having their own state with a capital in East Jerusalem.

"Australia also wants to divide Jerusalem into West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, all these will only stir more anger", he said. All they'll say for now is that the move will happen after "a peace settlement" is reached.

In a backdown from his original proposal, Mr Morrison declined to move Australia's embassy to Jerusalem immediately and instead said this would be delayed until a two-state solution was agreed - which could take years.

The relocation also triggered demonstrations in the occupied Palestinian territories, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco and other Muslim countries.

President Donald Trump's move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in May delighted Israel, infuriated Palestinians and upset the wider Arab world and Western allies.

On December 21, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of a resolution that called on the USA to withdraw its controversial policy shift, but all to no avail.

Last month, Dr Mahathir raised his concerns with his Australian counterpart Scott John Morrison over the country's intention to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel during the Asean summit in Singapore.
