How Liverpool left Man United trailing in their wake

After seemingly praising Liverpool for how they have got their house in order, Mourinho also appeared to take aim at opposite number Jurgen Klopp, insisting the German, who remains trophy-less since moving to England, and his team can not hide because they now have the ability and quality to challenge for silverware.

So often dwarfed by the wealth of City's Abu Dhabi owners and United's vast commercial revenue, Liverpool were this summer's biggest spenders in the transfer market.

"We got two positive results against Liverpool last season, we beat them at home, we didn't lose any match against them in four", the former Chelsea boss reflected.

"I think sometimes just to say it is not very intelligent".

Asked if manager Mourinho is different before these types of games, Rashford says it is hard not to feel the buzz and excitement but insists his manager is focused on getting a win.

United then missed out on Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng, but after the indifferent start to the 2018/19 Premier League campaign - the Red Devils are poised to return with a mammoth third offer.

United splashed over £160 million on Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, but both have been benched routinely by Mourinho, while £50 million summer signing Fred didn't even make the squad for their recent 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

In trying to warn of the threat United sill pose, Klopp arguably offered the most stinging criticism of all yesterday.

"I think there's too much firepower for Liverpool and defensively, it's one of the worst defensive teams I've seen United have in many a year". But when we analyse them and switch off the sound, there is a lot of quality. They still have De Gea in goal, unbelievable.

"We don't judge the points they have, we judge the quality they have, and we prepare for that".

But Klopp was unwilling to criticise United's style, saying that Mourinho's side do not always play negative football.
