Trump cites France attack as reason for US-Mexico wall

In a heated debate with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer on Tuesday, the president said he would be "proud" to shut down the government if Democrats withhold the funding he wants for a border wall. The readout said the two leaders discussed illegal immigration, but it made no mention of Trump's proposed border wall.

On Thursday, Trump announced that the USMCA promises substantial savings over the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and that means Mexico really is paying for the border wall.

At least five other times, the president said Mexico would pay for the wall in various tweets on January 6, 2017, and January 8, 2017.

During an interview with NPR's Morning Edition on December 12, Rep. Warren Davidson said that he had offered what he referred to as a "modest proposal" in the form of his "Buy a Brick, Build a Wall Act".

On Thursday morning, the White House released a summary of a Wednesday phone call between Trump and Mexico's new president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"It was a respectful and friendly conversation", Lopez Obrador said, according to Reuters.

Australia v India: first Test, day four
That's the only way you win a Test match (.) I strongly feel that you have to play a stronger bowling side to win Test matches. Australia's lower order led by Nathan Lyon had sniffed victory before being eventually bowled out for 291 on the final day.

On the Senate floor on Thursday, Schumer pushed back on the notion Mexico could be held responsible for funding border security.

Stephen King has hit out at President Donald Trump's funding demand for the USA leader's long-promised border wall. "So I will take the mantle. Well, Mr. President, if you say Mexico is going to pay for the wall through NAFTA, which it certainly won't, then I guess we don't have to", Schumer said.

"When you look at what happened with the caravans, with the people, with a lot - we shut it down, we had not choice, we shut it down", stated President Trump.

The Defense Department said US law allows the Pentagon to use its budget for border security purposes.

There is still time to avert a partial government shutdown, however that is quickly running out with Congress facing a December 21 deadline, when funding for a number of key government agencies is set to expire.

The president's comment comes as Republicans and Democrats are locked in a fight over an end-of-year spending deal.
