Oscar nominee, '70s film star Sondra Locke dead after cancer battle

The actress was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 1968 for her role in the film The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.

Locke reportedly died on November 3rd, 2018, news that was not made public until over a month later, when Radar Online obtained her death certificate from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

Locke's death was promptly reported to authorities, but was not publicized until a RadarOnline story Thursday.

While a third said: "The lights dim a little tonight for another beloved star takes her journey to the cosmos". Over the next decade-plus, Locke and Eastwood were both romantic and working partners, as she acted nearly exclusively opposite the actor and filmmaker, including in The Gauntlet, Every Which Way But Loose, Any Which Way You Can, and Sudden Impact.

Born Sandra Louise Smith in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the actress burst onto the scene at the age of 24 with her Oscar-nominated turn in the adaptation of Carson McCullers' novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. She was 74 years old.

The two starred in several big hits together such as Every Which Way But Loose, Any Which Way You Can, Bronco Billy, Sudden Impact and The Gauntlet. She would direct a television movie and a film starring Rosanna Arquette the following decade.

Locke may be best remembered, however, for her roles in the films of actor-director Clint Eastwood.

In 1989, Eastwood and Locke would have an acrimonious split, which included a lengthy legal battle that resulted in Eastwood helping the actress get a development deal at Warner Bros.

The lawsuit was settled in 1996 for an undisclosed amount.

Eastwood and Locke were professional and romantic partners for the next 13 years. She'd previously undergone a double mastectomy in 1990, as reported by Extra.

Locke is survived by her husband Gordon Anderson.

Locke remained married to Anderson until her death.

According to her autobiography, The Good, The Bad, and the Very Ugly: My Hollywood Life, Locke had two abortions during the 1970s.
