Miss USA Apologizes After Mocking Asian Miss Universe Contestants

Miss USA is being branded a "Mean Girl" for her comments about beauty queens who don't speak English during the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand.

She made the comments alongside Miss Colombia Valeria Morales and Miss Australia Francesca Hung in an Instagram Live video on Ms Morales' account on Wednesday (Dec 12).

"Miss Cambodia is here and doesn't speak any English, and not a single person here speaks her language".

"Like Francesca said, that would be so isolating and I said yes. I know that everything is just misunderstanding", another said.

Soon after the video surfaced, including on popular Instagram account diet _prada, Ms Summers met with sharp criticism.

Colombia's Morales is heard agreeing and laughing throughout Summers' rant, while Australia's Hung is seen smiling at the camera.

Later in the video, Summers brought up Miss Cambodia, Rern Sinat, saying: "Miss Cambodia is here and doesn't speak any English".

According to miss US, not speaking English can land you in social alienation and confusion.

But it seems that some participants at this year's Miss Universe Pageant seemed to have forgotten this basic motive behind the entire concept. Miss South Africa 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters claimed the 2017 Miss Universe crown.

Sinat was said to be "hurt" after the exchange, but the source said that she "felt better" after learning she had been assigned a translator by the pageant's organizers.

Many social media users expressed outrage over the now-viral video.

While another supporter said: "I definitely did not take it as if you were trying to be disrespectful or rude, but I can see how it MAY be taken wrong!"

"This new format will allow our selection committee to really get to know each of the contestants in the coming days", Paula M. Shugart, president of The Miss Universe Organization, said in a statement.

Rose took home the Miss USA title earlier this year. This led to the three having a conversation in which Morales speaks "great" English despite living in a Spanish-language country.

"I'm so upset that this situation has been misconstrued like this ... These are the moments that matter most to me", the post finished.
