Nancy Pelosi agrees to proposed term limits if elected speaker

Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi engaged in a verbal confrontation with President Trump during the broadcasted meeting in the Oval Office on Tuesday, during which the president said he would take the "mantle" for a partial government shutdown, the Hill reported. Pelosi won high marks from fellow Democrats for firmly but calmly going toe-to-toe with Trump.

Pentagon spokesman Jamie Davis said that while the military doesn't now have plans to build portions of a border wall, "Congress has provided options under Title 10 U.S. Code that could permit the Department of Defense to fund border barrier projects, such as in support of counter drug operations or national emergencies".

In a public argument, Trump bickered with US Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi about funding for the wall he has promised to build on the border with Mexico.

Building a border wall was a core promise of Trump's campaign, and one that the president has found nearly impossible to make any progress on since taking office.

Seven House Democrats announced their support for Pelosi after her announcement, likely giving her the votes she needs to win the speaker's gavel in the official floor vote in January. That carries significant stakes for Trump, who faces oversight investigations into his presidential campaign and administration.

Instead, their blazing row in front of the world's media gave a glimpse of the dire challenges confronting Trump as he reels from legal scandals and the new reality of his Republican party no longer controlling Congress.

But Pelosi would be bound by the deal even if it isn't approved by the Democratic caucus. It's advice she's doled out before. "We have to get TOUGHER AND SMARTER than ever before, and we will. Need the WALL, need the BAN!"

On Tuesday behind closed doors, she repeated the advice in an equally colorful way.

So there was public Pelosi on Tuesday, and Pelosi in private.

Trump's ownership of the looming shutdown was one of the few things Democrat leadership agreed upon in the meeting, a fact that was made particularly clear when Pelosi told the president that the American people believed they "should not have a Trump shutdown".

Donald Trump has threatened to shut down the U.S. government if the Democrats refuse to vote in favour of his Mexican border wall.

Trump said Friday that Congress should provide all the money he wants for the wall and called illegal immigration a "threat to the well-being of every American community". Nevertheless, here comes Schumer to the Oval Office repeatedly condemning government shutdowns - while conveniently neglecting the one he caused. Out came her gibe about Trump's masculinity, not her first.

She used a similar line in October during an event at Harvard University's Institute of Politics, where she said the wall "happens to be like a manhood issue for the President, and I'm not interested in that".

"Let's call a halt to this", Ms Pelosi said as the two New Yorkers went at it.

Democrats, on the other hand, are loath to give him this victory. "I won't blame you for it".

It was unclear how Trump would try to use the US Department of Defense to build the wall, given that defence and military construction appropriation bills were signed into law for the 2019 fiscal year without any wall funding.
