Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer Michael Cohen jailed for three years

Cohen received a three year sentence with the bulk of the sentence for paying hush money payments to two women during the campaign and two months in prison for lying to congress about the Russian project talks.

Cohen, who also pleaded to tax evasion and lying to Congress about a proposed Trump Organization building in Moscow, in court on Wednesday said his "blind loyalty" led him to cover up for Trump. The three-year sentence imposed by the judge was a modest reduction from the four to five years recommended under federal guidelines, but still underscored the seriousness of the charges.

Trump denies either fling ever took place, and hit back at his ex-lawyer on Twitter Thursday.

Ms Daniels and Ms McDougal each claim to have had affairs with Mr Trump in 2006.

Cohen will have to surrender to authorities by March 6.

He ordered Cohen to forfeit $500,000 and pay restitution of almost $1.4 million.

Pauley referred to Cohen's behavior as a "smorgasbord of fraudulent conduct" marked by deception and "motivated by personal greed and ambition".

Cohen, wearing a dark suit with a light blue tie, arrived for the sentencing with his wife, son and daughter, who was walking with a crutch.

Trump said Cohen pleaded guilty on counts of campaign finance violation to "embarrass the president and get a much reduced prison sentence" - and was not an indication that anything illegal happened.

Cohen, Flynn and ex-Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort are among a number of the president's aides being investigated by Mr Mueller's team.

Even though that specific building was emptied, the rest of the sprawling Facebook campus was not told to evacuate. Police said they secured a perimeter around the building and diverted traffic during the incident.

Under Federal law, the contribution of "anything of value" to a campaign must be disclosed, and an individual donation can not exceed $2,700.

Michael Cohen leaves Federal court, in New York, August 21, 2018.

The Mueller investigation is likely in the end game.

"He came forward to offer evidence against the most powerful person in the country", one of Cohen's lawyers, Guy Petrillo, told the court on Wednesday, arguing for leniency.

Again, false. The judge made clear during Cohen's sentencing that "each of these crimes is a serious offense against the United States".

While federal prosecutors said Cohen's cooperation was limited and selective, the Special Counsel's office said Cohen had "gone to significant lengths" to assist their investigation.

Davis would not specify what Cohen would tell lawmakers about his former boss, Trump, and alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 elections after the Mueller probe. "Mr Trump's repeated lies can not contradict stubborn facts".

"He was a lawyer and he is supposed to know the law", Trump tweeted.

Michael Avenatti, Daniels' lawyer, attended the sentencing and told reporters outside the courthouse, "Michael Cohen is neither a hero nor a patriot".

He also arranged a US$150,000 payment to former Playboy model, Karen McDougal, so that she would not go public about claims of an affair with Trump. "If it were, it's only civil, and even if it's only civil, there was no violation based on what we did", Trump said.
