Crews rescue man stuck in grease vent of empty California restaurant

A California man had to be rescued after becoming wedged in a Chinese food restaurant grease vent for almost two days.

Alameda County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that emergency crews responded to reports of a "a faint voice calling for help" from the building in the San Francisco area.

Officers found the grease-covered man stuck inside the metal vent of the vacant building, said Sergeant Ray Kelly. It took them about 30 minutes to cut the vent big enough to reach the man, firefighters said, showing the process in a series of photos.

The man was unable to move and was suffering from dehydration.

The man, 29, was covered in grease and oil and was trapped in such a position that he could not escape from the chute, which narrowed considerably near the bottom where it opened on to the stove.

It took firefighters about an hour to dismantle the grease duct, freeing the man. After the rescue, he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

"We are very thankful to our citizen reporter and our firefighters for saving this man", Kelly said.

The man was in good spirits despite his situation, Kelly added.

Authorities say he had been there for about two days. "The suspect is expected to make a full recovery". It is unknown if the suspect meant to commit a burglary.

Alameda county police are conducting a trespass and vandalism investigation but have yet to determine whether the man meant to commit a burglary, though they strongly suspect this was his reason for entering the vent. Officials said the case would soon be submitted to the district attorney.
