Donald Trump Nominates Former News Anchor Heather Nauert As UN Envoy

Nauert, 48, is an unusual choice for the United Nations role given that she had little experience in government or foreign policy before joining the administration in April 2017 after several years as an anchor and correspondent for Fox News, including on the "Fox and Friends" show watched by Trump.

The president said Nauert is "somebody that we know very well" and "has done a great job" as the State Department's press secretary.

Nauert's confirmation could hinge on her performance at the hearing.

Congress begins in January, Republicans will have a 53-47 vote majority over Democrats in the Senate.

Still, with Mr Trump, no staffing decision is final until he makes the formal announcement, since he has been known to change course in the past.

"I think there's a real sense that she can communicate effectively".

The U.S. would have "totally" gone to war with North Korea if it had "launched something" when tensions between the two countries reached the boiling point a year ago, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley has revealed.

While Nauert must still be confirmed by the US Senate, Benjamin said she will easily get the approval of the Republican-controlled chamber. "Ambassador Haley was a far more high-level figure, particularly early in the administration". Haley has served almost two years in the post.

William H. Barr Is Reportedly Trump's Attorney General Front-Runner
At the Justice Department, Barr's work ranged from combatting violent crime to investigation the Pan Am 103 bombing. But some inside the White House were concerned that Barr was too aligned with establishment GOP forces.

"She's [Nauert is] going to work with Nikki Haley to replace Nikki at the United Nations".

He added that colleagues described Nauert as a quick learner who "executed her functions capably". But without being a member of the Cabinet, she wouldn't have the same independence that Haley has enjoyed. With Mike Pompeo in charge of State, Nauert has been on the road much more. "I have great confidence in her". If her much more recent experience at the State Department provides such rich fodder for critics, it portends a hard confirmation process ahead.

In its first two years, the Trump administration has pulled out of the U.N. scientific, educational and cultural organization UNESCO, the U.N. Human Rights Council and threatened to leave the International Postal Union. It was filled temporarily at one point by Trump's current national security adviser John Bolton.

Haley is the first Indian-American to ever appointed to a Cabinet position in any United States presidential administration.

"Those days are definitely behind us, especially since Pompeo and Bolton joined", Pradhan said.

Nauert´s appointment would reinforce the link between Fox News and Trump, who has been accused of turning to the conservative-leaning channel, rather than experts, for policy advice.

Originally from Wisconsin, she attended Mount Vernon College, a now-defunct all-women´s school in Washington, before graduating from the elite Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
