Derek Fisher Named New Coach of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks

Aside from having a solid 18-year National Basketball Association career, Fisher has professional coaching experience from his tenure as Knicks head coach back in 2014.

WNBA outfit the Sparks made the announcement on Wednesday as ex-Los Angeles Lakers guard Fisher, 44, prepares to return to coaching.

The former Los Angeles Laker was named the new head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA.

He also won five NBA Championship, all with the Lakers.

Fisher's tenure as Knicks head coach included a freaky domestic spat involving former teammate Matt Barnes and his estranged wife, Gloria Govan.

The revelation follows a forensic examination of a hotel where she was last seen on Saturday 1 December with a "male companion". Her family have been left "devastated" by the development, Auckland City Police Detective Inspector Scott Beard said.

He fills the void created when Brian Agler, who reigned in November after four seasons, including leading Los Angeles to the WNBA championship in 2016. Brian Agler resigned as the team's head coach last week, leaving a vacancy that will be filled by the former National Basketball Association player and head coach. Fisher coached the Knicks to a 40-96 record over the course of his tenure.

Parker, who has been with the Sparks since 2008, said in a statement: "Derek is a great basketball mind who brings a ton of high-level experience to our team".

"Derek is a champion and proven leader on and off the court", Sparks executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler said.

He has now found his way back to coaching, but in the WNBA.
