The provincial capital of Ancona is the nearest big town to Corinaldo on the Adriatic coast.

At least six people, majority teenagers, were crushed to death in the early hours of Saturday (Dec 8) in a stampede at a nightclub where a concert was being held, officials said.

Some 10 of those injured are in a serious condition, according to local media, with many suffering severe bruising or even broken bones. "Sadly, six people died and dozens are injured", the fire service said in a Twitter statement.

Italian news agency Ansa said the audience at Italian rapper Sfera Ebbasta's concert at the Lanterna Azzurra nightclub panicked and ran for the exits after someone sprayed a substance similar to pepper spray.

Some reports say there was panic after pepper spray was sacked inside the club in the town of Corinaldo.

The ages of the victims weren't immediately given.

"Perhaps because of the dispersal of a stinging substance, boys flee by panic trampling". The disaster occurred at around 1 a.m. local time (0000 UTC).

La Repubblica newspaper quoted a survivor as saying that at least one of the exits was blocked.

A teenager who survived the terrifying ordeal told Italian media: "We were dancing and waiting for the concert to start when we smelt this pungent odour".

Paramilitary police are investigating the cause, in addition to fire officials.
