William H. Barr Is Reportedly Trump's Attorney General Front-Runner

Barr also wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post past year defending Trump's controversial decision to fire former attorney general James Comey.

He also supported President Trump's move to fire former FBI Director James Comey, writing in an Op-Ed in the Washington Post that Trump made the right move.

Mr. Trump called him "a highly respected lawyer" who is thought highly of by both parties.

On another Clinton-related investigative topic, Barr told The New York Times in November of past year he believed that there was more justification for the Department of Justice to investigate Clinton's role in approving a 2010 sale of us uranium stockpiles to a Russian energy company in what is commonly known as the "Uranium One" deal, than for investigating any potential collusion between President Trump and Russians.

After leaving the Justice Department, Barr served in a variety of high-level corporate positions, including as general counsel and executive vice president of Verizon Communications. Sessions' decision helped set in motion Mueller's appointment.

Barr has said there is more reason to investigate potential wrongdoing by Trump's campaign opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton, than there is to probe any potential collusion.

At the Justice Department, Barr's work ranged from combatting violent crime to investigation the Pan Am 103 bombing.

Another person familiar with the discussions said Barr is "a really serious contender, and possibly the front-runner" for the job, but stressed it was impossible to predict Trump's pick definitively until it was announced publicly.

"To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility", Barr told the newspaper. In 2017, he told The Washington Post that "prosecutors who make political contributions are identifying fairly strongly with a political party".

Barr's comments on Mueller and Clinton could stir opposition from Senate Democrats, but the nomination will nearly certainly not come up for a vote until next year. But some inside the White House were concerned that Barr was too aligned with establishment GOP forces.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the No 2 Republican leader, agreed.
