M's send All Star INF Segura to Phillies

The Phillies have acquired infielder Jean Segura, right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio and left-handed pitcher James Pazos from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for infielders J.P. Crawford and Carlos Santana, the club announced tonight.

For reasons that are hard to explain, the Mariners seem to be willing to move on from numerous key players this offseason, whether it happens to be Segura or Robinson Cano, who will coincidentally be joining the NL East as well after a trade to the New York Mets.

Jon Morosi reports that Segura, who holds a no-trade clause, is expected to waive it.

Segura, 28, hit.304 with 10 home runs, 63 RBIs and a.755 OPS in 632 plate appearances last season with Seattle.

In 586 at-bats, Segura only had 69 strikeouts and 32 walks but had an impressive batting average of.303 with RISP (runners in scoring position). He has six 20-homer seasons over his career, including 2016 when he hit 34.

With all due respect to J.P. Crawford since the potential always seemed to be there, the addition of Segura would clearly be an upgrade at the position.

Segura is owed $60 million through the 2022 season. Crawford, on the other hand, had a fielding percentage of.933 in limited action at shortstop, while Kingery posted a solid fielding percentage of.975.

Crawford, 23, hit.214 with three homers and 12 RBIs over 49 games last season with the Phillies. The deal has a $17 million option for 2023, with a $1 million buyout. Victor of the American League Final Vote previous year, Segura hit a three-run, pinch-hit, go-ahead home run off Milwaukee Brewers reliever Josh Hader in the eighth inning of the All-Star Game at Nationals Park. But Santana did not do a good job of bringing runners home as he hit.229 with RISP.

Jean Segura is the latest member of the Seattle Mariners infield from 2018 to find themselves as a member of an NL East team heading into the New Year.
