It's Official! Google Is Killing Allo, Its Little-Used Messaging App

On the blog post, the Tech Giant mentioned that they want every Android device to have a great messaging experience and they have been working closely with mobile industry to upgrade SMS so that its users around the globe can enjoy the services like group chats, read receipts or shirring high-resolution photos like WhatsApp. It does seem that Hangouts is being focused more on team collaboration rather than normal chat, and Messages may take over the latter goal.

The app - which first arrived in September 2016 with a bunch of clever features like one-tap smart replies, Google Assistant support, and the ability to share web search results in conversations - will be shut down next March. Google says it will continue to leave Allo running through March 2019.

As for Hangouts, the other unclear entry in Google's family of messaging apps, Google previously announced that it would "evolve" Hangouts into separate Hangout Chats and Hangouts Meet experiences for businesses. Compared to Allo, RCS is poised to replace the traditional SMS system on Android devices. The company's also continuing to develop Hangouts into a workplace collaboration app, helping it to rival the likes of Slack. When Hangouts is shut down, Google can better diversify its messaging user base across its five remaining apps, I guess.

As the shutdown time of the Google Allo is very much know, Verizon will be launching the RCS Chat on Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphone on December 6. We're fully committed to supporting Hangouts users in the meantime. The Enterprise-only services Hangout Chats and Hangout Meets will be made available to consumers in the future.
