NRCC Suffered 'Major' Email Hack During 2018 Election

Politico, citing senior party officials, said the NRCC had kept details of the hack hidden from the party's leadership, as well as its house members, saying it feared it would make it harder to find the culprit.

On the heels of a reported cyberattack on the National Republican Congressional Committee during the 2018 midterm elections, the incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee jabbed at Republicans who fought against implementing additional election security measures.

One senior party official told Politico said four specific accounts were targeted.

At the time, an investigation was launched. "Let's say they had access to four active accounts".

Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson of MS said Tuesday that Republicans "ignored election security at their own peril", adding in his statement that the GOP ignored prior Russian election meddling and "swept the issue aside" in recent years.

They also said they did not reveal the attack's existence because they were afraid it would alert the hacker that they knew of it and were looking for the person's identity. "The intrusion was detected in April by an NRCC vendor, who alerted the committee and its cybersecurity contractor", adds the article.

The boy's middle name is a tribute to Murphy's older brother and fellow comedian Charlie Murphy, who died of leukemia past year . It appears that the baby's middle name could be in honor of Eddie's older brother Charlie, who died a year ago .

The party's House membership recently elected Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., to be the NRCC's new chair.

Republicans used hacked information from the Democratic National Committee to their advantage in 2016. The DCCC hack led to internal emails and opposition research leaking to the public.

House Republicans lost almost 40 seats in this year's midterms.

The NRCC would offer no additional comment in order to "protect the integrity of that investigation", the statement said.

Additionally President Donald Trump has repeatedly mocked Democrats for being hacked in the 2016 election.

There is evidence to show that the hack was a major concern within the NRCC in the build-up to the midterm elections.
