President Donald Trump has handled the passing of former President George H.W. Bush with a level of normalcy and respect not demonstrated following the passing of Sen.

President Trump, who will attend the funeral at the Bush family's invitation, declared a national day of mourning for Wednesday and ordered all executive offices and government agencies to close for the day.

At the rotunda, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said there was a kindness about Bush that "was evident to everyone who ever met him".

Rev. Patrick Conroy, the House chaplain, praised Bush's commitment to service, from Navy pilot to congressman, United Nations ambassador, envoy to China and then Central Intelligence Agency director before being elected vice president and then president, from 1989 to 1993.

Memorial services began Monday to honor the late President George H.W. Bush.

The crew has been tasked by President Trump with carrying out "Special Air Mission 41".

Following the service in Washington, Bush will be flown to Houston Wednesday to lie in repose at St. Martin's Episcopal Church before burial Thursday at his family plot behind the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University. He will be laid to rest next to his wife, Barbara Bush, who died in April of this year.

Bush also served as vice president for two terms under President Ronald Reagan.
