One die, 40 injured as bus carrying youth football team crashes

One child is dead and 40 others, mostly children, were injured in an early morning bus crash, according to Arkansas State Police.

The bus was returning to Memphis, Tennessee from a championship game in Dallas, Texas when it crashed west of Benton, Arkansas, the state police said.

Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock says it received more than 20 patients following the Monday morning crash.

The driver, who survived the wreck, told Arkansas State Police that she lost control of the bus in a curve on Interstate 30 near Benton, Arkansas. CBS affiliate THV11 identified one of the teams on the bus as the Memphis Wolfpack.

Troopers say the charter bus carrying the Orange Mound Youth Association's football team left the roadway and overturned.

At a news conference in Memphis on Monday afternoon, Nickalous Manning, area superintendent of Aspire Public Schools, said Johnson attended an Aspire charter school and was "full of life, full of energy", died in the crash. Authorities say as many as 40 people were injured, a lot of them children. The bus driver has been questioned by police. Two were airlifted, Sadler said.

"When troopers arrived at the scene, numerous children were already off of the bus", Sadler said. They were treated for bruising, lacerations and some orthopedic injuries then released.
