Delhi Daredevils renamed Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2019

Ahead of the IPL 2019 auctions, the Delhi-based IPL franchise chose to change their name to "Delhi Capitals", unveiling the new title and logo at an event in New Delhi. The announcement to change the name was made in a function in Delhi by owners GMR Group and JSW Sports.

Kiran Kumar Grandhi, co-owner, Delhi Capitals said, "The new name symbolises Delhi's identity and just like the city, we are aiming to be the centre of all action going forward".

Ahead of the 2019 edition, Delhi have got Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad in exchange of Vijay Shankar, Abhishek Sharma and Shahbaz Nadeem. The two big changes were snubbing of local star - Gautam Gambhir, who was brought from Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 2.9 Cr was not retained ahead of the auction. They are the only side - among those that have featured in all editions - to have never made the final. However, thrilled to have Dhawan back in the scheme of things, cricket fans have started rooting for "Gabbar" as the new captain for Delhi in place of young Shreyas Iyer.

The change in name comes close on the heels of JSW Sports picking up a 50 percent stake in the franchise.

The support staff of Delhi Capitals, to be led by Shreyas Iyer, would comprise of Ricky Ponting (head coach), Mohammad Kaif (assistant coach), James Hopes (bowling coach).
