The former president who died on Friday aged 94 had a form of Parkinson's disease, and Sully could open doors, pick up items and summon help for him.

The Bush's family spokesman, Jim McGrath, posted the picture of the yellow Labrador retriever called Sully on Twitter with the caption "Mission complete".

Christy Smith paused over the weekend to pay her respects to President Bush at a bronze statue of him at a Houston park.

In the book she writes that she can "never forgive" Donald Trump for questioning her husband's USA citizenship, accusing him and other "birthers" of putting her family at risk.

In Washington, Bush will lie in state in the rotunda of the US Capitol tomorrow and Wednesday.

Roberto Molina, whose family owns Molina's Cantina, one of Bush's favourite Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston, said he remembers Bush's kindness to his staff whenever he would stop by to eat.

Mr Jimmy Carter, now the oldest surviving former U.S. president, said Mr Bush's administration "was marked by grace, civility and social conscience".

"Thank you for your service, Mr. President".

Mr Bush was a decorated World War II pilot, diplomat and onetime Central Intelligence Agency chief who saw his son George follow in his footsteps to the Oval Office - making them only the second father-son duo in American presidential history, after John and John Quincy Adams.

Although the two Republican presidents were in many ways polar opposites - the soft-spoken, patrician Bush reportedly once dismissed the blustering New Yorker as a "blowhard" and even voted for his rival Hillary Clinton - President Trump paid the late leader a gracious tribute, saying he had "inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service". He lost his bid for re-election to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, who would later become a close friend.

Bush's casket will then be transported by motorcade to the presidential library, where he will be buried at the gated family plot near his wife and their daughter Robin, who died of leukemia at age 3.
