Google Hangouts will shut down sometime in 2020

Now it looks like Hangouts may be on the way out.

According to a source familiar with Hangouts' roadmap (courtesy of 9To5Google), the service will be shutting down for good in 2020.

Google two years ago replaced its Hangouts app with Allo and Duo for consumers, while pushing the Hangouts brand as the enterprise solution with Hangouts Chat and Meet for chat and video conferencing scenarios respectively. Whether or not that holds up remains to be seen, and Google isn't officially saying anything about the app's future, but the writing has been on the wall since. forever?

Given Google's abandonment of the app in terms of development and its presumed eventual death, many have already transitioned away from using it.

Yield potential is estimated to be declining in every region as extremes of weather become more frequent and more extreme. Global warming is also helping insects to thrive, which can increase the number of insect-borne illnesses.

It technically will still be available as part of the G Suite's Hangouts Chat for workplaces, it seems.

As the Verge noted at the time, the move made sense considering the significant number of chat apps under the Google umbrella, including Google Duo, Android Messages, and Google Allo. It was the default Android app for instant messaging, group chats, and was the default chat service when communicating within the Gmail desktop version.

There's also Chat, its RCS product that is expected to launch with Verizon in 2019.

Google Hangouts would follow other Google products such as Google Inbox, Google Reader, Google Wave, Google Buzz, or Google Plus that the company shut down in recent years or plans to shut down.
