Multiple victims after gunman opens fire at U.S. hospital

A police officer, a doctor and a pharmaceutical assistant have been killed following a shooting at Chicago's Mercy Hospital on Monday.

When Lopez confronted her, the former couple argued about O'Neal calling off the engagement, and Lopez demanded that she return the engagement ring. But instead of returning to the academy to meet with department officials, Lopez went AWOL and was sacked, fire department spokesman Larry Merritt said Tuesday.

Instead of Chicago's Mercy Hospital & Medical Center being a safe haven for those in need of medical attention, on Monday afternoon, (Nov. 19) it became a place of chaos and fear after a 32-year-old man opened fire killing his ex-fiance, another hospital employee and an officer.

The department says there are "reports of multiple victims".

Officer Samuel Jimenez, who joined the force less than two years ago, was killed.

An official said that fewer than six people were believed to have been shot and at least "one possible offender" was also shot.

Merritt did not have any details of the past threats.

"What I would ask is that you keep all the victims of today's horrific incident in your thoughts and prayers", Supt Johnson said.

In a sign of the random nature of the rampage, the pharmacy assistant shot by the gunman just happened to be getting off an elevator, Johnson said. He added: "This just tears at the soul of our city".

Chicago Hospital Shots Fired

The gunman shot Dr O'Neal, 38, several times in the chest before standing over her and firing three more times, witnesses said. At one point, she heard five shots in quick succession, she said, but the shooting stopped after police arrived.

Chicago's police superintendent said officer Jimenez saved other lives.

"The police came from everywhere", she said. "It is the face and a effect of evil", the mayor said.

"I could tell he was now inside the lobby". She later started a blog with her mother called "My Daughter's Headache" in an attempt to help others with the same condition find hope. She went to a window and saw someone running into the hospital.

Maria Correa hid under a desk, clutching her four-month-old son, Angel, while the violence unfolded.

Lopez and the doctor he killed, Tamara O'Neal, had been in a relationship, according to police.

She lost track of how many shots she heard while under the desk "trying to protect her son" for 10 to 15 minutes.

Sgt. Larry Snelling, who works at the Chicago police academy, recalled Jimenez as a "stellar recruit" who was "on top of his game", according to the Chicago Tribune. Paul Bauer, was fatally shot while pursuing a suspect in the Loop business district.

That rampage followed the worst anti-Semitic attack in modern U.S. history, when a gunman opened fire on worshipers at a synagogue in the USA city of Pittsburgh on October 27.
