Multiple Fatalities Reported in Colts Neck Fire

The fire at an estate on Willow Brook Road was first reported at around 1:30 p.m. Firefighters continued to fight the blaze for hours and the airspace was shut down.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office wrote in a tweet it "is on scene at a fire in Colts Neck with multiple fatalities". Initial reports stated that there were five victims, and that one of them who had been found outside the home had been shot.

According to law enforcement sources from NBC News, one person was found shot dead outside a burning New Jersey mansion and two other bodies were also found inside.

Authorities said they were investigating whether there was a link.

There also was a fire today at a home in Ocean Township, police and prosecutors said.

The identities of the victims have not been made public, but public records show that the home is owned by Keith and Jennifer Caneiro.

The Ocean Township home, roughly 10 miles from Colts Neck, is owned by Paul and Susan Caneiro, and public records show the men are related, sharing at least one address in NY several decades ago. Police are investigating if the fires are connected.

Authorities told NBC that there's no reason to believe the nearby community is in danger.

Caneiro's brother's home is located in Ocean Township, just about 10 miles away from Colts Neck. The residents of that home were able to evacuate safely, and investigators found multiple gas cans inside the house.

"That remains to be seen but that is an option or angle that we continue to pursue", the prosecutor said.

Caneiro's LinkedIn profile describes him as the CEO and chief technology officer for a company in the New York City area called Square One.

Colts Neck is a well-to-do community about 50 miles south of New York City and is home to horse farms.

His brother, Paul Caneiro, is the company's vice president. Typical homes in the town of 10,000 are valued at about $750,000.

It is now unclear whether those victims were also shot dead, or died in the subsequent blaze, NBC10 reported.
