Rory McIlroy giving up European Tour membership in 2019

I would have never guessed that I would be here in this position if you told me in April or May this year, but it's been an incredible summer, topped by an unbelievable Ryder Cup.

Celebrating its 10th year, the tournament represents the final stop on the European Tour calendar.

The Northern Irishman who has played both the PGA Tour and European Tour for all but one year since 2009 said at the DP World Championship that he will concentrate on the PGA Tour because it will help him better prepare for the major championships.

Rory McIlroy dropped a bombshell Tuesday by hinting he could give up his European Tour membership in an effort to get back to the top of the world rankings next year. Emirates will also be bringing the Ryder Cup trophy to Dubai ahead of the Tournament and will be displaying it at its hospitality for visitors and fans.

"The way the schedule has worked for next year, it is going to be different for a lot of guys", McIlroy said.

The European Tour responded to the PGA Championship's new May date by switching its BMW PGA Championship to September from its old date in May.

The Omega European Masters is one of the two "pure" European Tour events McIlroy will play before the end of August.

Hollywood director Spike Lee has been forced to confirm that he is alive and well after being mistaken for the late Stan Lee . In the age of social media, grieving stars typically use their platforms to commemorate icons who have passed away .

"It is right at the very minimum at the moment and the European Tour don't feel that four is huge task to meet". That'll be the big focus of mine up until the end of August and then, obviously, we will assess from there.

'If I want to contend in the majors and continue my journey back towards the top of the game, that's what I want to do.

Rahm edged out Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Irishman Shane Lowry by one stroke previous year to emerge victorious in the $8 million season-ending event, capping a sensational debut season on the European Tour that also saw him win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

It has been a season of firsts for Francesco Molinari, but the Ryder Cup hero is looking forward to two more before finally being able to reflect on a remarkable year. Justin Rose may not be here, but Xander Schauffele - who can curiously still win the Race to Dubai despite only teeing up once on European soil - is, and so are the likes of Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed. "It's just a matter of doing it when I need to do it most".

The two star men went some way to helping Europe win the Ryder Cup at a canter from the United States of America, and ten golfers from that contest are competing in the first round in Dubai. Just over a month later he made history by becoming the first Italian to win a Major, at The Open Championship at Carnoustie, before playing a starring role on Europe's victorious Ryder Cup team, winning five points out of five.

So, who makes the grade for our DP World Tour Championship line-up?

"Everything is going to be so condensed between March and August, and that is why I am taking a big off-season to get myself ready, and to have that break and impose an off-season on myself and then go at it hard from March all the way through to basically the end of the season", McIlroy said.
