Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is ready to 'avada kedavra' Pokemon Go

The free-to-play mobile game comes from Niantic and Warner Bros.

Wizards Unite will allow players to battle beasts and cast spells around their neighbourhood in typical augmented reality style.

It was also noted that players could team up to combat powerful enemies, which sounds like a spin on Pokemon Go's gym mechanic. There's no set release date for Wizards Unite yet, just that it's coming in 2019. Niantic's next game will take fans from the nostalgia of catching Pokemon to the nostalgia of visiting the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

Rowling first introduced her beloved boy wizard to us, and since then it feels like the Harry Potter franchise has grown to fill virtually every nook and cranny of fandom that it possibly can. And yeah, there's the Jam City mobile game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, but that's bogged down by micotransactions and long hours of grinding (I now am in the middle of a days-long task of befriending an indifferent Niffler).

"Please resist the urge to panic".

With the announcement that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will drop sometime in 2019, a new teaser trailer and registration website offers more information on what's in store for us muggles.

The teaser trailer may be brief, but even the logo for the game provides some additional hints at what fans can expect. "Brush up on your spells, get your wand ready, and enlist immediately".

You will join the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, created by the Ministry of Magic and the International Confederation of Wizards, to "hone lightning fast wand reflexes", "sniff out the faintest whiff of magical disorder from afar", and become adept "in advanced casting of multiple spells".
