Real Madrid appoint Santiago Solari as permanent manager

Real Madrid appoint Santiago Solari as permanent manager

As Madrid's search for a permanent boss from outside the club failed to bear fruit, Solari has impressed by restoring an air of calm to the dressing room following a tumultuous period under Lopetegui.

It reads: "The Board of Directors of Real Madrid CF, meeting today November 13, 2018, has agreed to the appointment of Santiago Solari as coach of the first team until June 30, 2021".

Spanish rules state that an interim coach can not be in charge for more than two weeks so Madrid had to appoint Solari - or an alternative - to avoid punishment.

The uncle of Santiago Solari knows he faces a huge challenge as Real Madrid coach.

He has presided over victories against Melilla in the Copa del Rey, Viktoria Plzen in the UEFA Champions League plus Real Valladolid and Celta Vigo in La Liga.

Solari was handed the reins on a temporary two-week basis on Oct 29 after Lopetegui had overseen a miserable run that included just one victory in seven games.

The win at Celta gave Solari four wins from four games in charge, with 15 goals scored and just two conceded.

Real took advantage of league leaders Barcelona's surprise 4-3 home defeat to Real Betis earlier in the day to cut the gap to top spot to four points.

Lucas Vazquez, another who has played more under Solari than under his predecessor, said: 'It would be hard for him to have done any better.

"The Solaris are a football family and when things go well, we enjoy it as much as anyone".

In his final game as interim coach over the weekend before the global break, Solari saw Real win 4-2 against Celta Vigo.
