Democrat House committees weighing at least 85 Trump admin. probes

WASHINGTON-Democratic Rep. -elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, on Tuesday rallied a group of climate-change demonstrators waging a sit-in in the office of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, office, an encounter that touched off a display of mutual admiration between the 78-year-old matriarch and the millennial upstart.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani said in May that the attempt to block the merger was directed by the White House, only for the White House to then claim he got it wrong, and that it was the Justice Department's call. "We are inspired by the energy and activism of the many young activists and advocates leading the way on the climate crisis, which threatens the health, economic security and futures of all our communities".

Seth Moulton of MA and Filemon Vela of Texas, contended that their private conversations revealed that Pelosi would soon learn that she lacked backing within the full House to be elected speaker next year - despite her confidence that she would lock down the necessary support.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of NY, whom many Pelosi detractors want to run for speaker, said he believes Pelosi will get the 218 votes she needs - and insisted he was focused on his race for Democratic Caucus chairman, rather than a bid for the speakership.

At 29, Ocasio-Cortez will be the youngest woman to assume office as a member of the United States House of Representatives in January.

"I have spoken with @NancyPelosi about how our commitments to climate change should take shape in the 116th Congress", Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. "Reinstating the Select Committee is exactly what we need to do". She's mixed and mingled with new members during their orientation in Washington, and has plans to meet with leaders of the Progressive Caucus and members of the Congressional Black Caucus late this week. The group isn't backing or putting forward an alternative to Pelosi; their sole aim is to ensure she's not elected speaker. No candidate has emerged to take her on, with even her opponent after the 2016 elections, Rep. Tim Ryan of OH, saying he had no plans to jump in at the moment. "It's not just about confrontation but in a way, it's about real meaningful unity behind our goals that's what this is about".
