TURKEY: White House defends Trump WW1 no-show

And on Sunday, Trump paid tribute to veterans at the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial in Paris.

The French Army appears to have had a sly dig at Donald Trump after he cancelled a trip to honour USA soldiers killed in the First World War because of the rain.

The MP tweeted that Mr Trump was not fit to represent the U.S. and said that he was a "pathetic inadequate" for not defying the weather "to pay his respects to the fallen".

The US leader was heavily criticised for cancelling a trip to Belleau Wood battlefield in northern France on Saturday due to the rain, with some critics accusing him of disrespecting America's war dead.

"(Their attendance) has been canceled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather", the White House said in a statement, adding that a delegation lead by Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired general, went instead. During World War 1, U.S. troops were involved in a crucial battle at the nearby Belleau Wood where they suffered almost 10,000 casualties. But a light, steady rain and a low cloud ceiling prevented his helicopter from going to the site.

The cancellation of Saturday's visit drew criticism from those who say the president should have found a way to travel to Aisne-Marne regardless of the weather.

His fractious relationship with Europe has driven a wedge between the USA and some of its oldest allies on issues including trade, defence spending and his seeming deference to their looming neighbour to the east, Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Remembering Stan Lee's First Marvel Movie Cameo in 'X-Men'

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism", Macron said.

Mr Trump's tweet was especially wounding to Mr Macron.

French president Emmanuel Macron took a pointed shot at Trump, who bragged ahead of the midterms that he was a "nationalist", during the ceremony marking the armistice.

He wrote: "Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the US, China and Russian Federation".

Hey @realDonaldTrump here's a picture of President Obama in the rain supporting his American troops on Memorial Day.

The last minute cancellation prompted widespread criticism on social media and from some officials in Britain and the United States that Trump had "dishonored" USA servicemen. They rallied under a banner that said "Trump War" and slammed policies such as USA help for the Saudi-led war in Yemen. "Right now, the burden-sharing has been largely on the United States", Mr Trump said.
